Fletcher Cut Out Post Card,1914

Another re-post from my old blog, just for Postcard Friendship Friday. The art is signed J. Alan Fletcher. You can see it is named "Butterfly" Japanese. The opera "Madame Butterfly" was produced for the first time in 1904, and I imagine its characters were well known and absorbed into the popular culture.

I've yet to see another Fletcher post card, but the back indicates there were many, many others. The hunt for these rare specimens is always part of the fun.

Be sure to check out Beth's site for more interesting postcards from around the world.

  5. Your card is a beautiful curiosity. I love it and I do hope you find and post more of them. Last year I saw Madam Butterfly for the first time. It was a compact version in a small theatre (the teatro piccolo) in Rome, and the music was performed by a small electric orchestra. But the drama and the passion were enormous.

  11. What a great find, Linda.

I have two Fletcher Cut Out Postcards. Neither is super rare and I've seen them for sale (not yours). Both were imprinted with an ad for Quality Fruit Nectar, produced by Compound Flavor Co., Minneapolis, Minn.

One of my cards is of a girl, a stove with an oven, and things to put on/in the appliance--pots, bread, buns and a frying pan of eggs. The other of my cards has 4 cutouts related to Humpty Dumpty.

  12. Kwei-lin,

That's good to know, there's hope I may find another. Had meant to go to Allentown Paper Show in Pa. last weekend, but came down with head cold that knocked me out. A number of dealers at Jayne Keller's party said the paper show is quite good.
